The Montreal Express

The Montreal Express lacrosse team played its inaugural, and so far only, season at the Molson Centre (now the Bell Centre) in downtown Montreal during the winter of 2001-2002. The Express were not truly an expansion team, featuring a significant portion of the Columbus Landsharks, including the reigning Rookie of the Year, Tracey Kelusky.

The Express started the season off with a bang, beating the expansion Calgary Roughnecks 32-17 in a game that rewrote the record book (most goals by one team, 32; most goals combined, 49; most shots on goal, 68; and most penalty minutes, 155). After the dust settled, Kelusky, Codd and Aitken combined to sweep the Player of the Week honours for the Express.

Under head coach Terry Sanderson's guidance, the Express played well throughout the season, staying in the playoff race until the very end. They lost their final home game 14-13 in a thriller to the Albany Attack, but it was the last game of the season that ended their playoff hopes. The Express lost again to the Attack 14-6 which dropped them out of the final playoff spot.

At the end of the season, Brad Watters announced his intention to sell the team. The players were entered into a dispersal draft and, as new owners were not found during the off-season, it was announced that the Express would suspend operations for the 2002-2003 season, hopefully to return in 2003-2004.
